Personal Details

Shane Cassells (32) is a young dynamic representative who has represented Meath at local authority level for 12 years and is seeking to make the case for the county in the national parliament.

A native of Navan he is currently vice-chairman of Meath County Council and is a qualified journalist holding a BA in Journalism and Media Communications.

His key message for this election is the need to ‘restore confidence’ in the economy and the country.

Shane pledges to bring an articulate and energetic approach to tacking these national challenges and delivering real results for Meath West.

Government must deliver Regional Hospital for North East - Cassells

Fianna Fail council leader in Meath Cllr Shane Cassells has demanded that the full plan for hospital services in the North East be put in the public domain by Minister for Health James Reilly. His call comes following Minister Reilly’s remarks that the Accident and Emergency department at Navan hospital would stay open until Christmas while laboratory facilities would be closed. Political Record

Cllr. Shane Cassells is a member of both Meath County Council and Navan Town Council. He has served as Mayor of Navan on two occasions and has been a member of the local authority since 1999. He joined Fianna Fáil in 1996.

He has been elected to Navan Town Council on three successive occasions since 1999 and twice to Meath County Council since 2004. He is currently whip of the Fianna Fail party on both Meath County Council and Navan Town Council.

In March 2005 he contested the Meath by-election and although polling 16,117 first preference votes (32.4%) was narrowly defeated by the FG candidate Shane McEntee.

In June 2009 Cassells was re-elected to both Meath County Council and Navan Town Council – increasing his vote in both elections since 2004.

His current political objectives include the development of the new 68 acre Park in Navan, the fast tracking of the Navan-Dublin rail line and aiding economic promotion of Navan as a base for investment.

Cllr. Shane Cassells is a Director of Navan Enterprise Board, Navan Civic Trust and Navan Leisure Centre and Youth Officer for Fianna Fáil in Meath.
