Urgent UN and EU action required to end appalling tragedy in Syria – Ó FearghaílPosted on 08/06/12 by Sean O Fearghaíl
Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Seán Ó Fearghaíl has called on the UN and the European Union to take urgent and decisive action to halt the ongoing violence in Syria.
Deputy Ó Fearghaíl said: “We need urgent action by the UN and EU to tackle the ongoing situation in Syria. It is inhumane and truly appalling that people are being killed on a daily basis while negotiations are ongoing.
“Over 5,000 people have died since this unrest started and it is senseless to allow more people to die before the parties involved realise that the lives of the people in Syria need to be protected.
“These actions have to be condemned by any reasonable government and they are serious crimes against humanity. The international community needs to focus on holding those responsible to account but we also need to see all diplomatic efforts used to ensure that the UN Security Council is able to agree actions to protect the human rights of the people of Syria."
“The worsening situation in Syria demands leadership and at the moment the world community is failing the people of Syria.”
